WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • The median CS2 Premier player sits at roughly 11,300 rating, which is blue. Blue is not a bad rank, it is the exact middle.

  • 20,000 rating puts you in the top 10 percent of the playerbase. 25,000 puts you in the top 1.8 percent.

  • You need 10 wins, not 10 matches, before a rating appears. Losses during placement still drag your hidden estimate down.

  • Valve has never published the Premier formula. There is no fixed points per win, and anyone quoting one is guessing.

  • The size of a rating swing depends mostly on the gap between the two teams, so upsets move the number furthest.

Blue feels like a failure. It sits one step above the grey that beginners get, two colours below the pink everyone posts screenshots of, and it stares at you every time you open the game.

Here is what blue actually is: the exact middle of three million players.

Where everyone really sits

CS2 Premier rank distribution 2026 showing the share of players in each rating colour band

The median CS2 Premier player sits at roughly 11,300 rating. That is blue, a bit below the middle of the blue band.

Look at the shape of that chart. Grey and light blue together hold 43 percent of all players. Add blue and you are at 70 percent. Seven out of every ten people playing Premier are below 15,000.

Purple, which most players treat as “decent but nothing special”, is the top 30 percent. Pink is the top 10 percent. Red is the top 1.7.

Gold, the 30,000 plus tier, is 0.05 percent. Five players in every ten thousand.

What your number is worth in percentile terms

Rating numbers mean nothing on their own. These are the same figures expressed as where you stand.

What each CS2 Premier rating means as a percentile of the playerbase

A few of these are worth saying out loud, because they contradict how people talk in game:

10,000 is better than 56 percent of players. Not average. Above it.

15,000 is the top 30 percent. If you are purple, you are closer to the top of the game than to the bottom.

20,000 is the top 10 percent. People say 20k like it is mid. It is the top tenth of three million people.

25,000 is the top 1.8 percent. Fewer than two players in a hundred ever see red.

If your reaction to that is “but my lobbies are full of 20ks”, that is exactly what matchmaking is supposed to do. It shows you the slice of the playerbase you belong to, not the playerbase.

How the rating actually moves

This is where almost every guide starts inventing things.

What is confirmed about the CS2 Premier rating system and what Valve has never published

The left column is what can actually be confirmed. The right column is what Valve has never published, which includes the single thing everyone wants to know: how many points a win is worth.

There is no fixed number. The swing depends mostly on the rating gap between the two teams, which means beating a team rated above you moves your number more than beating one rated below. In evenly matched games the changes usually land in the low hundreds of points.

Two practical details that catch people out:

Placements need 10 wins, not 10 matches. If you go 10 and 14, you have finished placements with 24 games played, and all 14 of those losses pushed your starting estimate down.

Abandoning counts as a loss. Not a partial loss, a loss, plus the cooldown.

Round difference may or may not matter. Some players report bigger gains for 13-2 than for 13-11. Valve has not confirmed it, so I am not going to tell you it is true.

Why Competitive ranks look broken now

A side note, because people ask.

If you play the old Competitive mode with the skill group badges, you may have noticed the badges got much harsher. In September 2024, Silver I held 3.4 percent of players. In September 2026 it holds 18.1 percent. Silver as a whole now holds 59 percent of the Competitive playerbase, and the median badge is Silver Elite.

Your Competitive badge did not become meaningless. It became much harder. They are two separate systems and your Premier rating is the one worth paying attention to.

So what should you do with your number

Three honest things.

Stop reading it as a verdict on you. It is a percentile, and you now know what percentile. Blue is average because average has to be somewhere.

Stop comparing it across systems. Your Premier rating and your FACEIT level measure different playerbases with different matchmaking. A Level 7 FACEIT player and a 15,000 Premier player are not obviously the same thing.

Stop checking it every match. The number moves on a hidden formula with a lot of noise in it. Over ten matches it tells you almost nothing. Over a hundred it tells you your win rate, and your win rate is the only part you control.

If you want to know what moving that win rate actually requires, the hours and match counts are here, and the layers underneath it are here.

Frequently asked

What is a good Premier rating in CS2? Anything above 11,300 is above the median. 15,000 puts you in the top 30 percent and 20,000 in the top 10 percent.

What rating is good for my first season? Most players finish placements somewhere between 5,000 and 12,000. That is normal and it is not a ceiling.

How many matches do I need to get a rating? Ten wins. The number of matches that takes depends on your win rate.

Does my rating reset every season? It is hidden at the start of each season and revealed again after a win, usually slightly lower. Your previous hidden estimate still influences where you land.

Why did my rating drop so much from one loss? Most likely because the lobby expected your team to win. Losing as the favourite costs more than losing as the underdog.

Is Premier harder than FACEIT? They are different pools with different matchmaking. Neither maps cleanly onto the other.

The distribution figures in this article come from public trackers covering 3,146,950 CS2 Premier players in September 2026, cross checked against a second tracker covering 5,360,000 players over the thirty days to 8 October 2026. The two agree to within a tenth of a percentage point on every band. The rating formula itself is not published by Valve, and nothing in this article claims to know it.
